Wow here I am. An I.T. Officer writing a blog on Information Technology in Libraries - who would of thought ?
So I am thinking this could be a good place to write down my thoughts and feelings of what I am currently experiencing at the Library I am working at.
First a little bit about where I work. Peel Campus Library in Mandurah Western Australia. The Library's Patrons come from Murdoch University, Mandurah Senior Campus and Challenger Tafe, all three organisations have their own buildings and staff on site. Our patrons are the staff and students, close to 3000. From what I can tell (looking at other libraries) our library is reasonably advanced, we have lots of technical resources and our Library manager is always looking into getting new stuff to keep the Library up to date.
Resources: We have about 25,000 Monographs, 70 odd computers, a couple of Colour Laser Printer/copier/scanner's, Seminar Room with Projector, Digital Projectors, Digital Camera's, MP3 Players, Laptops, Smartboard etc.
We also provide an excellent digital resource to our Patrons and Mandurah Senior Campus it's called Clickview. Basically all our videos are stored on a server and can be watched with a click of the mouse in the Library or on any computer in Mandurah Senior Campus. We currently have more than 2000 vids / Learning objects loaded onto the Clickview server at the moment.
So what do I do.....
Ok I am classified as an I.T. Officer. I make sure all the computers in the library are working smoothly. I support the staff and patrons with all their I.T. needs. I help patrons with their study and work. Train teachers and staff on new technologies. Research new technologies. Create digital resources - screencasts, learning objects etc. So far I have been here for nearly two years and it has been fun.
